Bisi Bele Bath

A hearty Karnataka one-pot of rice, dal and vegetables in a rich spice blend, finished with ghee-fried cashews.

Ingredients

  • rice1 cup
  • toor dal3/4 cup
  • mixed vegetables2 cup
  • tamarind1 tbsp
  • bisi bele bath powder3 tbsp
  • tomato1 no.
  • haldi1/2 tsp
  • mustard seeds1 tsp
  • cashews12 no.
  • curry leaves1 sprig
  • dry red chilli2 no.
  • hing1 pinch
  • ghee3 tbsp
  • salt1.5 tsp

Method

  1. 1Pressure cook the rice and toor dal together with haldi until soft. · 15m
  2. 2Soak tamarind and extract the pulp. · 3m
  3. 3Cook the mixed vegetables and tomato in the tamarind water with bisi bele bath powder and salt until tender. · 10m
  4. 4Add the cooked rice-dal and enough hot water to reach a thick, porridge-like consistency, and simmer. · 5m
  5. 5Fry cashews in ghee, then splutter mustard seeds, dry red chilli, hing and curry leaves. · 3m
  6. 6Stir the tempering in and serve hot with a dollop of ghee, papad and boondi. · 1m
