Ingredients

  • idli rice2 cup
  • urad dal1/2 cup
  • methi seeds1/2 tsp
  • poha (optional)2 tbsp
  • salt1 tsp
  • wateras needed as needed
  • oil (for greasing)1 tsp

Method

  1. 1Rinse the idli rice with methi seeds, and the urad dal with poha separately, then soak both in plenty of water for 5-6 hours. · 10m
  2. 2Grind the urad dal to a light fluffy batter, grind the rice to a slightly coarse paste, then combine both with salt. · 20m
  3. 3Cover and leave the batter to ferment in a warm spot for 8-10 hours until doubled and bubbly. · 5m
  4. 4Gently stir the risen batter and grease the idli plates with a little oil. · 3m
  5. 5Pour batter into each mould and steam in an idli cooker for 10-12 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. · 12m
  6. 6Rest for 2 minutes, then scoop out the idlis and serve hot with chutney and sambar. · 2m
